How to Use a Multimeter for Cable Checks: A LAPP Cable and Connector FAQ

When a machine stops and the first suspected part is a cable, the fastest fix isn't always a rush order. Sometimes a 10-minute multimeter test saves an entire afternoon. Sometimes it proves the cable is really bad, and that means you need the right replacement, not just any cable. Whether you found this page because you searched 'how to use a multimeter' or because you're trying to identify an old LAPP cable, the first step is the same: verify before you buy.

I handle urgent cable and connector replacements for industrial plants. In Q3 2024, the team I work with processed 47 rush cable orders; 95% met their committed ship dates. The ones that didn't had two things in common: skipped testing or incomplete part identification.

1. How do I use a multimeter to test a cable?

Disconnect the cable from power and from both devices. This test must be done on a dead cable. If you can't isolate it, stop and find a qualified electrician.

Set the meter to resistance mode - ohms, shown as the Ω symbol - or continuity mode if your meter has it. Touch the two probes together first. If the meter doesn't read near 0 Ω, your test leads may be damaged or the battery may be low.

  1. Place one probe on the conductor at one end and the other probe on the same conductor at the other end. A good conductor should read near 0 Ω, or a few ohms on a long cable. If the meter shows OL, the conductor is open.
  2. Move one probe to another conductor. This checks for a short between conductors. You should read OL.
  3. Repeat the same test between each conductor and the shield or drain wire. Again, OL is the normal reading.

Here's something that surprises people: a standard multimeter can't verify insulation quality. It only tests at low voltage. A cable can show clean continuity and still leak current at 400 V or 600 V. If a ground-fault keeps coming back, use an insulation tester - a megohmmeter - at the cable's rated voltage, not a regular ohmmeter.

2. Why would a cable pass a multimeter test and still cause a fault?

Because most machine-tool faults aren't a completely open wire. They're intermittent. The conductors break inside the jacket after repeated flexing, then touch again when the cable bends back. With power off, set the meter to ohms and keep the probes connected to one conductor pair while flexing the cable by hand along its likely stress points. If the reading jumps to OL, you've found it.

Another possibility is the connector, not the cable. What looks like a broken cable is often a loose socket, a pulled strand, or a dirty pin - especially with M12 connectors. Test from pin to pin, not just wire end to wire end.

3. I found a code like 6300. Is that enough to order a replacement?

No. I know it feels like enough, but it rarely is.

A number like 6300 can be an internal inventory code, a drawing callout, or a partial part number. It doesn't tell us whether you need a standard cable, a high-flex cable, a shielded cable, or a cable with the right voltage rating. When I get a request that says only 6300, I ask the technician to find the full manufacturer part number on the jacket or on the original datasheet.

Write down the complete number, including leading zeros. For example, LAPP UNITRONIC USB high flex cable is identified by its complete LAPP article number, not by a nickname. If the jacket is damaged, measure the outside diameter, count the conductors, note the AWG or mm² size, and check whether the pair is shielded.

Only if the application is stationary and the environment stays within the standard cable's rating. If the cable moves, I wouldn't.

The term high flex is not just marketing. It describes conductor stranding, insulation, and jacket materials chosen for repeated motion. A normal USB cable can look identical on the outside but fail quickly inside a drag chain or on a moving carriage. If the original spec says LAPP UNITRONIC USB high flex cable, stay with that product family or verify the replacement's flex specification against the actual motion profile.

Also, don't make the mistake I hear often: treating high flex as infinite flex. There is no infinity rating in cable. Every flex cable has a finite life based on bend radius, travel length, temperature, and acceleration. If someone says this cable is effectively infinity, ask for the test data that backs it up.

5. What should I do if my old purchase record says LAPP Tannehill Inc.?

For ordering, supplier names are less important than part numbers. A record that says LAPP Tannehill Inc. tells you the source or selling entity. It doesn't tell you the exact product - especially if the line item used an internal SKU. The fastest way to avoid a mismatch is to compare the product in the machine or on the shelf with the current LAPP datasheet.

If the product documentation is gone, copy the marking from the cable jacket. Many LAPP cables include the manufacturer name, part number, and length or lot marking on the jacket. That is far more reliable than a purchase order line that says 6300.

6. What information should I gather before asking for a rush delivery?

Nothing makes a rush order more expensive than verifying the part after it has already shipped. Before you call, take a clear photo of the jacket marking and both connectors. Then collect the following:

  • Complete manufacturer part number and cable description.
  • Cable length needed.
  • Number of conductors and conductor size.
  • Connector types on both ends, if applicable.
  • Whether the cable moves or stays stationary.
  • Delivery deadline and whether someone can receive the shipment.

That list may look basic, but it is exactly what turns a two-day research project into a twenty-minute order.

7. How do I know if a rush quote is fair?

Ask for the total delivered price and ask for each cost item to be listed. In my experience, the phrase that prevents surprises is: What's not included in this quote? Cutting fees, after-hours handling, freight, and weekend delivery can all appear later. A vendor that lists those costs upfront - even when the total looks higher - usually costs less in the end.

Rush charges are legitimate when they reflect real work. Just confirm the commitment date in writing. Rush should mean a promised ship date, not a nice note on the packing slip. Pricing varies by location, product, and time, so verify current options with your LAPP supplier.
