LAPP Cables and Connectors: 7 Questions From Engineers With No Time to Spare

I coordinate urgent cable and connector supply for an automation equipment manufacturer. 6. How do I choose from LAPP's huge range without getting overwhelmed?

This is where the "infinity pro" problem shows up: the range feels infinite, and the stakes are pro-level. But you don't need to know every part number. You need a process.

Ask four questions:

  1. Does it move? If yes, you need a continuous-flex cable, not a fixed-installation cable.
  2. Is it indoors or outdoors? That drives jacket material and UV protection.
  3. Is there EMC interference? That drives shielding—cable, gland, and connector.
  4. What's the chemical or oil environment? That drives the jacket compound.

7. Can LAPP connectors and cables work in existing machines with other brands?

Usually, yes—but you validate first. LAPP makes industrial connectors like M12 and RJ45, so in many cases you can mix LAPP cables with existing connector brands if the pinout and ingress rating match. "Compatible" is a claim, not a guarantee. Check the datasheet for both components before you trust it.

I've seen M12 connectors from different brands mate fine, but the thread engagement was shorter than the original, which caused intermittent contact under vibration.
